Michael Corner (b. Regina)

Michael Corner is a Banff based painter who has worked in the mountains since 2000. He began painting in 2013 and works primarily in oil on canvas, exploring pictorial space, language and representation through instinct and play. His figuration examines the roles and masks people adopt, and his drawings, paintings and Alphabet series use images as a form of thought.

Themes of staging and embedded imagery shape his practice. Small embedded paintings act as vortices that pull past and present into a single visual field, prompting viewers to question where one image ends and another begins. Corner has exhibited at Masters Gallery in Calgary, the Whyte Museum in Banff and The Edge Gallery in Calgary and Canmore, and he has participated in Art Toronto and a residency at the Whyte Museum’s Mather Cabin. His work will be presented with Ryan Green Gallery at Art Miami in December 2025 and in Venice in 2026 during the Biennale.
